¡¡EUREKA!!

RICE & BEANS
I've tried and I've tried, and I've tried and I've tried to find good Mexican grub in Europe, and now it has been found. I have high-fived a good many people over the discovery of this little joint. I can't recommend it highly enough. The owners are easy going, sociable, and just generally charming. The food is hearty, plentiful, flavorful, and reasonably priced. They make their own corn tortillas, an amazing salsa, and an even more impressive Guacamole. My last trip was with six hungry friends. They sat us downstairs in a little cave called the 'Fiesta Room'. For 15 per head, we stuffed ourselves with guacamole, tortilla chips, delicious tacos and beastly burritos. The room buzzed with moans of appreciation. We all left with bulging bellies, and even still took a doggy bag. California tested, Kelsi approved!

LE PICK CLOPS
Cool joint in the Marais, with a fresh & tasty menu. Kaly and I went last week for their massive bagel sandwhiches. They essentially throw a pile of ingredients onto your plate and let you assemble your sandwhich yourself. They give you plentiful portions which is rare for a Parisian sandwhich, so I'm a fan.
Plop down on the terrace and people watch, or sit inside for a colorful, mosaic experience.

BRUNO GOTGATSBACKEN
Stumbled into a really hip shopping center in Sodermalm one afternoon. It had a really difficult name to pronounce, and was made up of 5 shops wrapped around a Café. I was crippled with hunger, so I grabbed a tasty grilled sandwhich. Mozarella, pesto, and tomato. You can pretty much put pesto on anything and I'm in.
This sandwhich experience made me decide that I'm definitely getting a sandwhich maker when I get to my next home.
I sipped raspberry lemonade and spied on drop dead gorgeous Swedish boys, then strolled around the amazing shops. I'm not a huge fashion guru, but I swoon for Swedish style. It's so clean and crisp, but somehow manages to be edgy as well. So much balance. Big fan.
Anyway, if you've got a few million dollars, this is a great place to drop some cash.
You'll look mega cool when you're done.

NADA BAR
We arrived at Nada as it opened, around 17:30, and stayed 'til closing. It was a Sunday night, so it was quiet, but between the friendly bartending cousins, and the crazed and wonderful regular, Mats, we had an amazing time. There was a real communal feeling to the bar. Anyone could DJ, and everyone inside knew everyone else's name by the end of the night. That was cool.

PET SOUNDS
Cool Music, cool crowd, cool bar. I'll be honest, I passed out behind the ATM machine pretty early on, so I don't remember how awesome it was. But Loz and Emma were way into it. I remember thinking that the music was sort of Pulp Fiction-y, which was cool. The booze wasn't too expensive, but the selection was pretty much down to beer that night, as they were somehow out of all their mixers for long drinks and cocktails. But we like beer, right? So that's fine.
When you finish up here, head over to Nada Bar. Photos comin' up.

BEYOND RETRO
This isn't going to make me sound like a very good person, but this is how I travel: I like to make a list of bars I'd like to visit, and spend my late afternoons bar hopping. This is a great time to do it, they're not too crowded yet, you get to chat with the staff a bit, and usually you're just in time for happy hour! Interesting bars, I find, are often near interesting...other stuff. Galleries, cinemas, shops, you name it. I was on my way to check out Nada Bar, when I passed Beyond Vintage. I swooped in to discover the mega mart of vintage shopping. My initial reaction was awe. My second second impression was a bit annoyed, pretentious even. I felt like it was a bit over the top; too much, too organized. It took away from the "thrifting experience" of rummaging. Bull shit. 10 minutes later, I looked down and saw 6 items flung over my arm. Good ones.
So then and there I had to change my philosophy. I paid attention to the fact that these items were truly vintage, complete with yellowing tags. I paid attention to the fact that the sales girls were friendly and funny and didn't bitch when I asked if I could take a few snaps. (In case you've never whipped out a camera in a vintage shop without asking. DON'T.)
I also paid attention to the fact that the selection was truly good. Unique pieces that weren't so outlandish that you couldn't wear them in the modern world.
So, in the end, I left happy, with a sweater which has since won me multiple compliments.
I'll warn you though, it's not exactly a bargain center. Dresses ranged from 30 to 90 euro, and the average sweater was around 20. But many items were inexplicably marked 1/2 off, so hunt for those gems. It's the kind of place you go to for a kick, expecting to get something one-of-a-kind you'll forever adore, but not necessarily expecting to pay bottom (nor top) dollar for.

GUNTER'S
This was a little road-side sausage stand. Off a varied menu, Gunter suggested a long spicy sausage wrapped in coleslaw, mustard and a warm baguette, and we followed.
3/3 of us gave it an enthusiastic (gloved) thumbs up. You should like the faint sensation of bees stinging your tongue, because it is quite spicy (what do I know, I'm white), but it is one delicious way to keep warm on a -10 degree day.

La Perle

Read this well; I am recommending La Perle by day. By night, it's a whole 'nother place.
By day you go to La Perle to sit in vinyl booths, and eat off a small, but classic menu. You'll eat large, tasty portions at moderate prices, and receive friendly service from fuzzy hipsters. Coffee or booze with a book is another popular option. I think the booth seating is my favorite bit. None of this hard stool nonsense for me. I want to sink my bum into my seat, and my teeth into my food.
At night you pretty much only wanna go here if you're dressed in your hippest duds, ready to judge and be judged. Elevator eyes all around.
You should also want to drink your booze standing on the sidewalk, because you're definitely not going to fit inside. Fitting inside, in my mind, is key here, because the decor makes you feel like you're dining in a Tarantino flick. Don't miss out on that!

So, daytime good, nighttime meh (Unless you're just out to score some serious hipster tush. In that case, raise your fist and shout "Eureka".)

UFO

UFO is nothing new, but it's certainly a new favorite of mine. Go anywhere with the right group of people, and you'll love it forever. The fact that they've got Karmeliet on tap doesn't hurt either, though.

La Perla

Sunday I woke up feeling lonely. That happens when I have neither internet, nor plans for the day. I hadn't seen Addie in ages, so I sent her an aggressive text message, and she promptly rang me up. We spent a great afternoon, wandering without any agenda. We ate fake Mexican food at a place that was cheap and charming. For 8.90 at lunch time, La Perla will give you a starter, plate and coffee, or plate, dessert and coffee, as you like. Obviously I went for plate, dessert and coffee. It was exciting because I didn't get to choose which plate or which dessert.
I never order shrimp, so I was pleased when they brought me shrimp and some other stuff wrapped in a tortilla and drizzled in what I think they thought was Enchilada sauce.
It wasn't authentic, but it was still tasty. Even tastier was the pineapple tart dessert.
Nothing like a little tropical pie to brighten up a January day.

Discovered an amazing Asian market last weekend. Super cheap, and stocked with Asian goodies, Tang Frères is the place to go for all your exotic food shopping. I picked up two pots of curry paste, chili flakes, bay & lime leaves. Monday I tested the curry. It was hellfire hot. I guess I'm whiter than I thought. Less red paste next time, more coconut milk!

Kaly told me about this bookshop months and months ago, and last week, walking through the Marais in search of coffee, I turned a corner and ran right into it. I guess the name's a good one, because it obviously stuck in a head where few things stick.
Kaly was right, it's great. Well lit, and small enough to take everything in. Mostly French books, but a really solid supply of all the English books you've been wanting to read. A good place to go if you need to find a good book fast.
