Cults

Cults-The Curse
Guards-Resolution
Is Tropical-I'll Take My Chances
The Heartbreaks-Jealous, Don't You Know

The Kitsuné Maison label put on a really nice show at my favorite Parisian venue, La Maroquinerie not too long ago. On the bill were Is Tropical, Cults, Guards and The Heartbreaks. All great shows. I went for Cults, but left with a big crush on Is Tropical.
Best concert of 2011 so far.

Broken Bells

Had the luck to pick up a last minute ticket to Broken Bells last night.

It was their second show EVER, and they had us bopping, and swaying and toe-tapping all the way through.
James Mercer has such nice, low-key stage presence. Not cocky or wooing. He was friendly, played his music, thanked the audience with sincerity, and said goodbye. That's all I needed.

The lyric “So if you want to follow me, you should know / I was lost then, and I’m lost now / and I doubt I’ll ever know which way to go” struck me in a way that it hadn't before when I listened to it through my speakers. It's a good line.

Also, I stared at him throughout the entire show thinking about how much he looked like Kevin Spacey...with a twist of Jonathan.

Girl Talk

Gregg Gillis seems like a nice guy. He threw confetti, he threw toilet paper, he danced into the audience, and even invited the audience to dance onstage.

This seemed like a friendly gesture, I liked him for it.

But after a few minutes, I realized that I did not want to watch the lamest people at the show dance their hearts out.
And when I say lame, it isn't from any kind of snobby standpoint. By lame, I mean enthusiastically annoying. These were the 15 year old boys who had bought matching Girl Talk TShirts at the merch table, and pumped "rock on signs" through the entire show. They stood next to Mr. Gillis, patting him on the back, and hugging him frequently. They shouted at the audience as if they were part of the show.
It was distracting.
I did not digg it.

If you could crop out all the faces surrounding him, and focus on the auditory element,
Girl Talk himself, put on a great show.

I wish my camera hadn't died four minutes into it.
